Ever hear of Parkinson’s Law? According to Wikipedia, (yeah, I know it’s not a good place to do factual research, but it will suffice for this), it basically says that “work expands so as to fill the time available for its completion.”
There’s just one problem: I’m not a bureaucracy; I’m a one-person business at this point. There is no bureaucracy to feed off of itself and create more tasks.
In my case, the work expanded by simply going through the process of actually launching a product and discovering new things that needed to be done that I never thought about. I’ve studied tons of courses and ebooks on the subject, but there’s nothing like actually DOING it to realize that no one “whatever” holds all the answers. The answers come only during the Doing.
So while I can blame it on Parkinson’s Law, it wouldn’t really be true. Besides, the word didn’t just expand to fill the allotted time; it’s taking me even longer than the allotted time.
What the heck am I talking about?
Getting that product launched. The one I talked about in my last post. It’s not going to happen today.
Once I started doing all of the work I needed to do to get this product launched (take a look at the last blog entry), I realized that there is even more work to be done. I’m going to push through and get it done — and once everything is ready, THEN, and only then, will I set the launch schedule.
Yuck.
Just wait until next week. Or tomorrow. Or whenever I can convince myself that it’s not C. Northcote Parkinson’s fault. It’s mine.
Thanks for understanding,
Tom
P.S. — Don’t know what I’m talking about? Create a product and launch it and you’ll learn. If you don’t know how to get started, this product shows you how to create and sell your very own information product.
