An email popped into my Inbox today. After a quick search of my Inbox (I use Google mail and follow their advice; I hardly ever delete anything), I discovered that the email was from a forum I signed up for almost two years ago. No problem; it’s legit.
The problems were as follows:
- The email was about a domain auction.
- It was the first email I had received from this forum in over 14 months.
- Hence the email looked like spam.
What would I have done differently? Let me rephrase that question: What WILL I do differently?
I have a customer list from a product that I first offered several months ago (a couple of you blog readers purchased it). I’m going to be re-launching it soon and offering an affiliate program. When I do that, I’m going to add a couple of small items to the product so that I can offer an additional bonus when I announce the affiliate program to the product owners (they’ll get a two week head start before I open it to non-buyers).
In my case, since it’s been several months since I sent that list an email, I’m going to start off the email by saying something along the lines of “You are receiving this email because…”.
Simple, right?
I’m also offering the extra bonus (not sure just what yet!) because it’s been a long time since I contacted this list and I want that first re-contact to be a positive experience. Delivering a bit more value is a good way to it.
I’ll also re-activate the download links for a week when I send the emails in case anybody needs to re-download the product (I use Rapid Action Profits to manage that product, which makes it easy to do so).
You might want to keep these things in mind should you need to warm up an “old” list. Think of some way to make the person glad that you have re-initiated contact!
Thanks for listening,
Tom
