A Measure Of Action

I keep a folder on my computer (it’s actually an external hard drive) where I keep my projects. I have three sub-folders within the main Projects folder, labeled as follows:

* Concept. This is for ideas that come to my mind that I haven’t started to research or work on. Sometimes these end up on index cards. Either place works fine; at least the idea is “captured” for later action.

* Development. This is for projects that I’ve decided to pursue and am actually working on.

* Fielded. This is for projects that I’ve actually finished.

I just finished doing a 1.5 hour interview with Willie Crawford on the subject of computer and website security (incidentally, my blog announcement list subscribers got the link to the “Resources” page for that call in the announcement email for this blog post as my way of saying “thanks” for allowing me to take up space in their Inbox). It involved a lot:

* I had to come up with an outline for the interview that Willie and I could use.

* I had to create a “Resources” page and edit it several times as things changed.

* I had to do some research to ensure that the information I gave out on the call was accurate.

* I had to do extensive coordination with Willie (who lives in Florida) to ensure that everything went off well.

* I had to edit the outline after the call so that I could make it available to people who participated.

* And I still had to walk the dog…!

The bottom line is that the call is done, the resource page is posted (which includes a link to a video about a “footprint” in WordPress — it’s part of an upcoming product that I gave to call participants and blog announcement list subscribers) — and I was able to move the sub-folder for that project from “Development” to “Fielded”.

It felt WONDERFUL!

I still have a couple of follow-up actions to perform, but the notes I need for those are either on my desk on a piece of paper or in my Inbox.

Completion. I finished something today. It feels good.

I’m looking forward to filling up that “Fielded” folder even more in the coming weeks.

Thanks for listening,
Tom
