Friday, April 11, 2008: Getting Past The Tongue

by Administrator on April 11, 2008

I like food. Today is Day 30 of the trial run (one whole month!), yet I
still find myself attracted to cooked food.

I like the smell. I like the way it looks. I still (fondly) remember the
way it tastes.

Smell. Sight. Taste. All of these are sensory.

But what happens after the taste is gone?

That’s what keeps me going.

I’ve had the pleasure of seeing years of excess fat melt off my body (40
pounds since the first of the year). I have the pleasure of knowing that
I’m no longer consuming unhealthy fat and various chemicals (remember, when
you apply heat to two elements, it creates another element — and that’s
what cooking is all about — applying heat!) that my body has to work hard
to get rid of — IF it can get rid of it at all.

So while the senses aren’t happy at the way I ignore my former favorite
foods, the rest of me is quite happy.

All I — and you — need to do for success on this diet is to ignore the
tongue. And nose. And eyes. Get past it. Think about what happens after
those fleeting few seconds of sensual stimulation pass. THAT’S what really
matters.

I’ve also decided, due to my weird schedule, that I’m only going to post my
weight to FitDay.com three times every two weeks. That will be on the day
when I get off work at 6:00 AM in the morning and don’t have to go to work
that evening. Things tend to fluctuate too much on the other days (eating
habits, sleep patterns, etc.) and this will probably give an accurate
enough picture of my weight loss without me having to record my weight
every day — much less even being able to find a computer! So three times
every two weeks is all I’m promising right now for posting my weight.

Tomorrow is my son’s fifth birthday party. There’s a big ol’ chocolate cake
sitting out in the car for his party. I’ve decided that I’m going to
indulge tomorrow. Yes, I’m going to do it!

I’m going to eat one small crumb from his cake. Sorry to disappoint you…

My son doesn’t fully grasp what I’m trying to do just yet but he is
starting to understand. We were in the produce section of a local grocery
store today (he was sitting in the cart) and was remarking about all of the
healthy food that he saw. He likes to help me weigh the produce I purchase
(and steal stickers off the bananas when I’m not looking!) and is
constantly asking me about all of the foods. He does eat apples, and is
eating more with each passing day, but isn’t ready yet to each much more
than that. I think that he’ll eventually start eating more fruits (and
perhaps someday even throw in a few vegetables). The more he eats, the
better.

His little sister, on the other hand (now 22 months old) loves to sit with
Daddy on the couch and “chow down” on just about anything I have on my
plate. She also likes to feed me small fruits, like strawberries and
grapes. It’s soooooo cute!

Enough for now. Remember: forget the tongue and remember what you are doing
to your body.

Smacznego,
Tom
