As we inch ever closer to the official start of summer, one thing is clear: The distance that produce has to travel to reach my table here in southern Germany is getting shorter.
Today I had some strawberries that I think were actually grown here in Germany somewhere. I know that my “plant and forget” strawberry plants that grow outside my front door are starting to get a few red strawberries (the ones that get the most sun; long story for another blog post!), so if somebody actually grows them for a living, then they could very well be ready and growing very close to home.
All I know is that I opened my food bag (how about “feed bag”? I kind of like that…) tonight and my wife had packed a medium sized orange and about 12 strawberries. She took the green stems off of the strawberries and put them top-down in a plastic box. By the time I ate them, a bit of juice had leaked from them, yet the strawberries themselves were perfect for eating. Not too hard, not too soft, juicy…
Much better than the strawberries we were getting a couple of months ago (and a bit cheaper, too).
The raspberries are growing nicely, and even though we did manage to get one ripe one already (it was a bit sour when my daughter and I shared it), it will be a few weeks before we’ll be able to go out there daily and pluck off a bowl full of them. We do have more plants than last year and I’m going to have to put up a new stake and some more wire to keep them off the sidewalk.
I think I already mentioned it, but our relatively new apple tree — which produced a grand total of six apples last year — is going to have quite a few more this year. I wouldn’t be surprised if we ended up with at least 100!
It’s a great time of year to be an 80/10/10 raw food addict.
Push ups are also getting easier. I could only do one set of 5 push ups just two weeks ago. Today I was able to do three sets of 10 pushups (although I admit that I had to drop to my knees for the last five push ups of the last set). That’s great progress; I just need to keep building on it.
So I’ve now progressed from “toothpick” arms to “matchstick” arms. Woo-hoo!
Roger Haeske talks about exercising and heat today on his blog. And this diet is a great way to help prevent heat injuries because, if followed consistently and properly, it can lower your core body temperature. Be sure to read my comment on that blog post! But it’s true; you WANT to be more active on this particular diet.
Smacznego,
Tom
